Portaging around Niagara Falls on my way to the Arctic!
Переглядів 8 тис.2 місяці тому
A look at what canoeing down the Niagara River, then portaging around Niagara Falls was like as part of my 3,400 km journey from Lake Erie to the Arctic. I edited this video down to just 3 minutes for brevity's sake, but keep in mind that the actual time to paddle the whole river (58 km) and portage (18 km) was almost 2 days, with me camping the night on Navy Island above the falls. The full de...

Don't Slip...Going Upriver Alone in the Arctic.

In my books, I frequently describe going against the current, wading upriver, leaping from slippery rock to rock. Here is some GoPro footage illustrating what that looks like on an arctic river. The key part, it turns out, is not to slip and smash your head off a rock. See adamshoalts.com/ for more.

Canadian author Adam Shoalts discusses how to pole a canoe upriver. His new book, Beyond the Trees, is about his nearly 4,000 km solo canoe journey across Canada's Arctic, which involved hundreds of kilometres of upstream travel. His canoe is a 15 foot prospector made by Nova Craft Canoe, out of their TuffStuff material, a composite of basalt and Innegra fibers. See adamshoalts.com/ for more.

Maybe you should carry a kayak paddle for the rapids? Wear one of those sticky traps on the back of your hat and on the tent peak. outside.. It may catch some flies. Fascinating journey! I wonder if there is any gold in the river banks. I read somewhere that the big rivers like the Missouri and others had all kinds of log jams on them that were cleared out by the river boats. It was a big job by hand I would bet. Maybe they used dynamite too, It would be nice to have a small chainsaw for getting through more easily in some spots. Where are you getting al that strength and endurance? I don`t think anyone one would even want to challenge this feat. Bravo. Maybe make a rough travois for your gear when possible. Think of all that CO2 that lush greenery is capturing and tuning into oxygen through photosynthesis.
All I can say is wow, courage, tenacity and unshakable demeanor.
Where to start?!! I would have simply turned back at 48:40 when you came to that quick-bog that your paddle dipped 2 feed deep into! No way I would have attempted that - it looked to be able to swallow you whole in a minute. I would have been happy with the 130 odd kilometres I had come by that stage!! The 21km or portage through forest and swamp was beyond mind bending. I take my hat off to you - you are the personification of resilience and grit.
I'm in awe of your abilities to handle everything you encounter. Did you pack in all your food for the whole trip or did you get resupplied?
I packed all my food---mostly power bars/granola bars/clif bars, nuts/seeds (almonds, cashews, pumpkin seeds, raisins), a little dried fruit, and one freeze-dried meal per day (rice/pasta normally, eaten in the evening).
@@adamshoalts You are a genuine beast my friend. I will continue to follow your exploits now and in the future.
I don't have close to the mental fortitude it would take to accomplish something like that, let alone solo. You are a strong man. Respect sir.
Looking forward for part two!! I enjoyed watching some genuine adventure through some very isolated land like the Hudson Bay Area as I am from Ontario and unfortunately only have a skill set good enough for a week in Algonquin.. I am glad I live in a time where I can watch someone who’s able to do something I can only imagine of doing myself! Thank you for the treacherous work and well documented film work! Well done.
Thank you!
OMG!
💪👍
Always an amazing adventure watching your videos and reading your books! Incredible to have a Canadian travelling these wild lands of Canada for all of us that have never, nor will ever see! We all have to realize what precious wild land we have still in this country and protect it.
metahuman
U wild wild man! Thank you for this epic journey
Wow you are an insipiration. Would love to read your biography about how you grew up and learned all these skills and knowledge!
Thanks! I mention a bit about my background in my books: Alone Against the North, Beyond the Trees, and Where the Falcon Flies.
@@adamshoalts Cool! Major backlog at my rural county library for your books! Good thing my birthday is coming up. Do we get to see the end of this journey!?
This is the most intense thing I have seen in a long time. So interesting that you referenced "into the wild" at least twice. This could have gone so bad, so many times. At least the original native people and explorers had others in the group that would bury you when you die. Your level of experience, fitness and calmness in the face of adversity is remarkable. So much respect.
Bless you❤
Brave n strong soul.... Good on ya be safe..love the views Tha😂❤nks!
Holy shit imagine early humans exploring this place without repellant and gloves and netting... absolute nightmare 😭
Dude you got some balls hitting those rapids up there all alone lol
Regarding solo canoe journeys... This guy is the Toughest!!!!! Mind blowing!!!!
You are the only young long distance canoe tripper, I’ve seen, that EVER bothered to learn how to pole a canoe rather than get a $3000 dry suit and drag upstream. Respect. Brother. Respect. Plus you have a skill that will last a lifetime and never wear out. Fair winds and full bellies.
Worth IT????
Watched the entire video! Inspirational! Great to know there is at least a little bit of wilderness left in this world.
There’s a reason you’re the only one out there. I thought I was adventurous. I wouldn’t have lasted a week!
Great inspiration ❤
Nothing short of legendary... Amazing and thanks for sharing your journey.
Loving your content! Related to footwear protection…. I did a lot of backcountry traversing up and down gullies, hillsides with streams and boggy areas in South America. My feet also took a beating. Several pairs of boots were destroyed and none cut the muster until I found the Original Muck Boot company boots. Game changer! It’s like wearing an orthopedic cast. I could walk all day on the most treacherous terrain and feel nothing. The thick neoprene leg portion goes up to under knees and my feet stayed relatively dry even after a full day of stumbling on river stones, climbing over slippery logs, etc. Highly recommend for expeditions.
I have a few pairs of Muck Boots. I wore them on my 3,400 km journey from Lake Erie to the Arctic. They're great for that and as you said very comfortable, but I wouldn't recommend them for the Hudson Bay Lowlands: the water is too deep and will easily come over the tops of the boot. That's why I use the hip-waders.
Very good, it's like to see a very good movie, Fantastic adventure. I have many pictures in my head now. Tank
This channel should have a 100,000 subscribers! Remarkable journey and stunning storytelling. Can’t wait for part 2!!
Tolle Leistung so eine Tour alleine zu schaffen. Aber so etwas ist auch eine Herausforderung des Schicksals, sorry aber ich finde das letztlich verantwortungslos.
Wow! I heard about you from Canoehound and he was right. Very impressive adventure!
If I'd gone on this trip none of the video would've been usable because it would've been full of me swearing as I tried to get over/past all those log jams!
Really enjoyed this
Nice adventure solo journey enjoying with nature
The calorie burn is quite impressive.
What canoe are you using? Like the idea of spruce tea. Some really nice country side.
Nova Craft Canoe, 15 foot propsector.
Looks well suited to your trip.
I tried those clams a few times as well and I’d have to have one foot in the grave to bother with them again haha
Thank you for this! Looking forward to part deux...
Nothing beats the feeling of freedom you get from exploring the great outdoors. This video transports me back to the sense of adventure I felt on my recent camping trip. Liked!!!
Sunset @ 1:10:54 Wow
Man i miss Alone across the arctic circle before they took it down from youtube..
Great report, my hat down young man. I'm glad you came back to tell us about it, because you took a great risk doing this solo.
Really good - looking forward to part 2
Epic trip so far man! 🙌🏻 Love the addition of wild edible plants! That long portage looked killer ☠️
Absolutely amazing nice sound.thanks for sharing your journey.guys I recommended you visit the himalayan mountains k2 and Nangaparbat view point from one place moses peak.add this sound in your bucket list.
This is a ballsy trip for sure. I'm focussing on your camp set ups and haven't seen a rifle. Do you have a firearm with you? Bear spray i'm assuming.
Dude at the End your going to look like Ground Round ! 🎉😒😭✌️
that was a most excellent bushwhack
Hats off to you! What a REAL Adventure! Cant wait for part 2!
Great canoe adventure! Thanks for sharing your story and wisdom.
I follow outdoor channels and I love them. I thought your video was excellent, you have a lot of knowledge and courage. I loved the tips on how to use resins to repair clothes. The tree sap to heal the wound was incredible. Greetings from Brazil.
I really love that you share your knowledge of the area and the natural resources that are available to eat or heal, a lot of us have lost that knowledge.
